Kinesio Taping Therapy

What is Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio Taping is a therapeutic tool/method used by practitioners such as physiotherapists, massage therapists or manual osteopaths to help relieve client’s pain.

It is a thin, flexible tape that is designed to provide just enough pressure and support to facilitate strength in the muscles and tissues. It often helps to aid muscle movement and enhance athletic performance by relieving pain, reducing swelling and inflammation, and providing support to joints and muscles.

A 2021 survey published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy found that most professionals use kinesiology tape for post-injury treatment, to help lessen pain and to stimulate the muscles into action.

How Does Kinesio Tape Work?

Kinesio Taping TherapyKinesio taping method is based on the science of maintaining support to the body while allowing blood & lymphatic fluids to move freely through and around the injured muscle. Kinesiology tape stabilizes the injured area by lightly adhering to the skin and applying pressure to the tissues it’s wrapped around.

The elasticity, or stretchiness, of kinesiology tape allows for movement and you can continue playing sports or perform day to day activities. This makes it different from the more rigid body braces which sometimes entirely isolate the muscle to limit movement to provide stiff support.

What are the top benefits from using Kinesio Tape?

Kinesio tape takes the stress off the joints by creating a rubber-band effect that modifies movement while supporting muscles and tendons.

Some of its most common benefits include:

  • Relieve pain
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Relax overused muscles and joints
  • Improve athletic performance
  • Stabilize joints
  • Support the body’s natural healing process
  • Can be worn daily, even in the shower

How long can you wear Kinesio tape?

Once therapist positions the tape on the body, it can remain on the skin as long as the adhesive works, usually two or three days.

The adhesive is strong enough to withstand approved activities, showers, and daily life movements. Of course, if the adhesive causes itching, rash, or other types of discomfort, the tape should be removed.

What conditions does Kinesio taping treat?

When applied correctly along with other treatment methods, Kinesio tape can help relieve the discomfort of:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • General muscle pain
  • Shin splints
  • Knee pain
  • Achilles tendon pain

Is Kinesio tape effective?

As a stand-alone treatment, Kinesio taping may provide some support. However, when combined with other treatment methods Kinesio taping can improve performance and promote healing.

Therapists at Waterfront Physio & Rehab will generally combine the technique with hands-on manual therapy to gently massage the area along with providing some modalities/machines to relieve pain.
